Riding an eFoil or jetboard on Lake Dunlap and Lake McQueeney
These are our neighbors. Dunlap sits minutes from New Braunfels off 46, McQueeney a little further down toward Seguin. Both are Guadalupe Valley lakes — narrow, river-fed, lined with docks and boathouses, and completely different in character from Canyon.
Check dam and lake status first
The Guadalupe Valley lakes have been through a long dam replacement program, and status has changed repeatedly over recent years. Before planning a session, check current conditions with GBRA or your neighborhood association. We track it — if you are not sure, ask us and we will tell you what the water is doing this week.
The water
Both lakes are narrow and river-shaped. That has two consequences worth understanding:
Wind protection is excellent. Tree-lined banks and a narrow channel mean these hold calm conditions when Canyon and Travis are blown out. On the right morning, this is the best learning water in the region.
Space is tight and traffic is close. Ski boats use these lakes hard on summer weekends, and there is nowhere to spread out. Ride early, ride midweek, or ride in winter.
Dock density is high on both. If you have waterfront, you have a launch, and that is the ideal setup for an electric board.
Why an electric board fits here better than a boat
- No wake. These lakes are lined with private docks and seawalls. Wake is the local political issue. You produce none.
- Silent. You can ride at 6:30 a.m. past houses without waking anyone.
- No launch logistics. Carry down the steps, ride.
- Nothing to store. No lift, no slip, no boathouse space.
Every one of those is a bigger deal on a narrow residential lake than on open water.
What to ride here
Awake VINGA — the eFoil is genuinely at its best on this kind of water. Sheltered, flat, and calm early. If you want to learn to foil in the New Braunfels area, this is where.
Awake RÄVIK — the jetboard works, though the channel is tight for full speed. Better here as a rotate-the-family board than a top-end run.
