Riding an eFoil or jetboard on Lake LBJ
Lake LBJ is a constant-level lake. In Texas that is close to a superpower. While Travis and Buchanan swing with drought and ramps go dry, LBJ stays where it is, which means your dock works in August the same way it worked in April.
That makes it one of the best places in the state to own a board rather than just try one.
The water
LBJ is a river lake — long, with the Colorado and Llano arms feeding it and plenty of narrow water between wider basins. Practically, that means shelter. When wind kills a session on Travis, there is usually a protected stretch on LBJ that is still rideable.
Horseshoe Bay is the developed end, with the most private docks and the most boat traffic on summer weekends.
Kingsland and the Llano arm run quieter and shallower. Watch depth and structure in the upper reaches, especially after the river has been running.
The narrows between basins are where the wind protection is. Good for eFoil learning on a day that would otherwise be a write-off.
When to ride
Mornings. Same rule as everywhere in Texas, and LBJ rewards it because the water goes genuinely glassy.
Summer weekends are busy. LBJ carries real boat traffic out of Horseshoe Bay and Kingsland. Weekday mornings are a different lake entirely.
Winter is excellent here. Constant level, empty water, and a wetsuit handles the temperature.
Why an electric board suits LBJ specifically
- Constant level means dock-launching always works. No adjusting to a waterline that moved forty feet since your last session.
- No wake, no noise. LBJ has a lot of residential shoreline. You can ride past it without being the boat everyone hears at 7 a.m.
- No slip fee. Horseshoe Bay storage is not cheap. A board lives in the garage.
- One person can ride. No driver, no spotter, no coordinating a crew.
What to ride here
Awake RÄVIK — the right board for the open basins and for busy weekend water. Up to 35 mph, handles chop, short learning curve.
Awake VINGA — the eFoil. Best in the sheltered narrows and early mornings. Silent flight above the surface once it clicks.
Wave-Vo — electric watercraft, available in Texas through Divine Voltage.
